Titled “Energy and carbon implications of rainwater harvesting (RWH) and greywater recycling (GWR)”, this report quantifies lifetime carbon emissions of RWH and GWS systems. Embodied carbon and carbon emitted from operational use is accounted for and the systems’ contribution to reducing carbon emissions is compared to the use of mains water. The project, in collaboration with the Environment Agency and Energy Saving Trust, demonstrates that emissions can increase up to 100 per cent with the installation of RWH and GWR, indicating technological developments and a review of government water efficiency policies are required.
