"Sociological Reflections on the Neurosciences" short listed for major Book Prize

New volume is short listed for the British Sociological Association Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness Book Prize 2012 for its contribution to medical sociology

United Kingdom, August 2012 – Many now see the neurosciences as the key frontier of contemporary biomedicine, which offers new ways of thinking about mind, body and society. Emerald Group Publishing is proud to publish Sociological Reflections on the Neurosciences, the first book to adopt a sociological approach to this field.  Nominated and short listed for the British Sociological Association Foundation for the Sociology of Health and Illness Book Prize 2012, it offers innovative and empirically grounded chapters that range across sociological methods, concepts and traditions.

Edited by Martyn Pickersgill and Ira van Keulen, the book brings together leading sociologists researching this burgeoning area, with contributions from Canada, Finland France, Germany, Israel, the UK and the USA, reflecting the emergence of the ‘Sociology of Neuroscience’ as an important focus of global sociology.  Chapters cover a range of salient cases, including neuroscientists and family views of ADHD; Asperger’s syndrome and neurochemical selfhood; Brain Stimulation for Parkinson’s disease and OCD; and neuroscience and addiction, amongst others.

Robert Dingwall, Consulting Sociologist comments, "This book sets out the social sciences' evaluation of the cultural significance and explanatory limits of neuroscience. It will be foundational to contemporary debates about how we understand human behaviour and shape public policy and governance."

Recently published in paperback, making this book accessible to student audiences in this new and emerging branch of study, it has been short listed by the BSA for its significant contribution to medical sociology.

Sociological Reflections on the Neurosciences is published as Volume 13 of the Advances in Medical Sociology book series by Emerald Group Publishing.  For more information visit
